This page is dedicated to the construction of the third glass project in Carrabelle- The Arch
I started this arch with the St. Louis arch in mind. However, while starting the mockup for the arch support framework, I realized that I could never achieve the soaring quality of that arch. I needed something very light for the framework and settled on 3/8" plywood with 2x3 connecting supports. As usual I had some help with the erection of the frame but it went up easily with 3 people and is very solid. I suspect that this is a very long lasting project as I am having trouble finding blue beer bottles which I am planning on using for the first 4 feet on either side of the arch.
One problem I did not foresee was the nature of Florida summers and the frequency and amount of summer rain. The arch was completed but fell in July 2014 from excessive rainfall. If only I had built those buttresses. I will add photos on the next page.
